purple pink red

Picked up this vintage issue of Better Homes and Gardens, circa January 1967 over the weekend at an estate sale. Look at that crazy pinkalicious cover! The issue had an awesome section on color schemes, and this purple, pink, and red combo was one of the highlights.

I am totally loving that rug!! I could see this as fun inspiration for a summer party or to liven up a drab eating nook. I love the idea of painting the rattan chairs and table a glossy red, adding purple cushions and fuchsia table cloth. I’d keep the wood banquette, but maybe leave the walls white. Adding in a graphic painting or poster that picks up on the pinks and purples could be a nice update. Can you believe the issue used to only be 29¢?! I’ll share some more of the great color schemes they featured in a future post.

elephant ceramics sale

Oh how we love Elephant Ceramics! Michele Michael handcrafts her pieces with a beautiful linen texture and gorgeous color washes! Today she had her first sale and they’re flying out like hot cakes! (Almost all sold out just in the first hour!) If you go right now, you might still be able to grab one, otherwise, peruse her work , check out her blog, and get in line for her next sale (hurry michele! we want more!!)

measure me stick

This “measure me” stick is intended as a growth chart for kids, but I think the cool graphics and colors could easily double as a great piece of contemporary artwork for grown-ups. Designed by Donna Piacenza and Jody Work. Available here.

Casa Brutus March 2011

Great colors going on in the March 2011 issue of Casa Brutus. I can’t read Japanese, but from what I can gather (thanks to Google), looks like it’s an original kitchen unit designed by Charlotte Perriand, and is located inside a Parisian apartment building designed by Le Corbusier.

The flat is owned by Jean-Marc Drut and Patrick Blauwart. It’s small, but so efficient! (photos by Shiro Muramatsu via Casa Brutus)

Jason Polan at West Elm

Really liking the collaboration between Jason Polan and West Elm for Spring 2011. The simple graphics and warm muted colors look great with the little black accents.

My favorite pieces are the “Quartz” pillow and the framed artworks. Have any of you picked up any of the new pieces from West Elm? Check out more here.

tgif dance break: hello

It feels like it’s just been one lame stoooopid struggling week. TGIF! Hello weekend! I saw these dino pinatas at Target and they made me smile. The idea of punching something to death and it spilling out tons of candy sounds kind of appealing today! Anyway- it’s friday! go do a happy dance! Song: “Hello” by Martin Solveig ft. Dragonette

marginal notes by note design studio

At the 2011 Stockholm Furniture Fair, there was an exhibition by Note Design Studio titled “Marginal Notes.” I was immediately drawn to the happy colors and materials, but the concept behind the pieces is also brilliant and really resonated with me. They explain:

“One morning over a cup of coffee, we decided to let go of all ideas about strategy and allow ourselves to play for awhile. We all went through our notebooks and looked at the sketches in the margin- those that appear in passing, intuitively and suddenly- those that never really got the attention they deserved…”

They ended up making some of these ideas and concepts into prototypes and form studies, eventually collecting them and in the end, this exhibition was created. (a ton more shots after the jump…)

dar hi

Catching up on my stack of magazines, I came across a recent issue of Maison Cote Sud magazine, and found this little modern magical place: Dar Hi. Located in Nefta, Tunisia, it’s a brand new design hotel/eco-lodge/spa. It was designed by Paris designer, Matali Crasset.

The entire place is breathtaking, and reading more about it, I’m even more impressed. The colors are both playful and appropriate to the setting, and the shapes and details feel modern as well as respectful to the locale.

DesignBoom also has a more in-depth post with more photos here and here. Check out a video of Matali Crasset and Dar Hi after the jump… (note, it’s all in french, but you can still get a good look at the place)

christian wach

Over the weekend, I stopped by Inspriation-LA, held at the Queen Mary. It’s an amazing vintage clothing and goods event, and as the name implies, was truly truly inspiring. It was put together by Rin Tanaka, who curates those awesome “My Freedamn” books, which I’m sure many of you have seen (and if you’re into apparel or vintage design, probably have a few!) One of the highlights of the show was seeing this series of paintings by artist and surfer Christian Wach.

They were made of resin and acrylic paint. He had a small booth, but these 4 paintings totally stood out. Christian is the founder of Canvas Surfboards, with shaper Ryan Engle. Check out more of his work via his blog, as well as on the Canvas Surfboards site. (images via Christian Wach, Inspiration-LA)

diane von furstenberg home dining collection

Really liking the new Diane Von Furstenberg Home dining collection. The asymmetric plates and bowls are my favorite, but I also appreciate the “Miro flowers” artwork pieces. I don’t know if I’d use the entire set together, but a few pieces as accents could be fun. Might not be for everyone, but definitely feels fresh. Check out more here.
